Practical guide
Paste text to see total Han characters plus English words, graphemes, UTF-8 bytes, lines, paragraphs and estimated reading time. Counting stays in this browser.
How to use it
- Type or paste the text to count.
- Review the live metrics; the total is Han characters plus English words.
- Choose Clear before counting a new passage.
Example
A mixed passage with ten Han characters and three English words has a total of 13 by this measure. Punctuation and spaces are excluded from that total but appear in character and byte counts.
What to know
English words are recognized from Latin letters with optional internal apostrophes. Other scripts are excluded from the total but count as characters. Graphemes and UTF-8 bytes use different units, and reading time is an estimate.
Common question
Why do characters and bytes differ?
Han characters and emoji often occupy multiple UTF-8 bytes, while grapheme counting groups joined symbols as one character. Spaces and line breaks also use bytes.
